In 1588 the English were just positive that "god" had sent the storms which destroyed the Spanish Armada. By 1589 it seems that "god" had switched sides as the much lesser known English Armada was also savaged by storms as they attempted to invade Portugal. The English Armada was a colossal flop too. So either:
