The point is not whether the nazis were christians or atheists, the point is that the nazis combined dogma with brute suppression, there was no room for differing opinion. All dogmatic systems lead to suppression of some sort. It can be religion, it can be nationalism, it can be communism, it can be nazism.
Dogma is not a unique feature of religion and the possibility that one day an atheist variant raises its ugly head cannot be excluded. The only remedy I see is room for differing opinion, democracy, critical thinking.
