-When you replant, do it densely and avoid the gravel. You want to surface to be covered with some kind of turf or mat (so gravel is out...gravel is inviting weeds, think about it from the weeds POV..gravel and rough, bare places are sort of what they do - pioneers).
I've got a friend who would advise covering everything in layers of cardboard or newspaper with new dirt added on top.twenty or thirty years ought to do it.
