As a person who enjoys self-learning mathematics, the one downside to this approach is the difficulty in finding books with complete and detailed solutions manuals, especially for higher mathematics--most of these books contain limited solutions (I'm actually reading one currently). Now, based on some web surfing that I did regarding this issue , it may be the case that the authors make the assumption that students will have other students along with professors with whom they can exchange mathematical ideas with. As a result, it makes sense not to list all of the solutions in a manual for students, as this could lead to students just regurgitating the various solutions in the manual without really developing a solid understanding of the material. Hence, providing a partial solution manual leaves the door open for more mathematical interaction between students and instructors.
With that said, IMO, this is somewhat unfortunate for self-learners, as many of them actually enjoy the material. IMO, self learners want to gain a deeper understanding of the material that they are studying: they learn for the sake of learning and are not looking for an easy effortless experience; thus, regurgitation would be pointless . Hence, having that extra means to work more problems and ensure that one's reasoning and answers are precise and correct would be a great aid in maximizing the self-learner's appreciation for knowledge and ideas.
