They're not horrible, but if you subsist on them, you ain't gona be pooping any time soon. There's a reason there only a tiny bit of TP in an MRE. You get to save it for a week before you need it.
They may have gotten better, but I remember some truly horrible things in them. I'm looking at you, fruitcake. I always considered it a small victory if I got peanut butter and crackers.
We heated them in the engine compartment of whatever vehicle we happened to have handy. Mostly we ate them cold.
