RE: Why millennials are drawn to socialism

Much is made of the failure of the soviet union, in these convos. The propagandizing effct of that period is impossible to ignore.
What they tried in the soviet union (whatever a person wants to call it) didn;t just fail on it;s own. It had help. Lots...and lots of help. It had help from the outside in the form of our august selves, and it was tanked from within by shit like lysenkoism and enforced oligarchy (which we're flirting with today, in our own way - and it will be amusing to hear in 50 years over the corpse of our country that american capitalism was fundamentally flawed and yadda yadda yadda). We then ignore where and when socialist policies work, and rebrand -them- as something else™.
We've forgotten that both are tools. It would be strange to see a person throwing all the wrenches out of their kit, on account of the hammer. Just as strange as it is to see the propaganda of the past accepted as a brute fact of reality today. Just as strange as it is that we cannot conceive of a merge between the most functional parts of each tool (even as we do exactly that) being leveraged to create a better final product.
50's era war department economic theory is a historical curiosity, today. Not some guiding principle for a better tomorrow. It;s true that people have desires that cooperation and state level planning really aren't all that good at securing...and it;s also true that people have needs that market competition fails to deliver by design. An obvious solution presents itself.
