His stance changed over the course of his life and we have a picture of that in autobiography. The death of his daughter seems to have been profoundly difficult for him (as we would imagine it would be) and finally soured his notion of so much as a little g god. His wife was deeply concerned with his lack of faith, and he held back from publishing in part because he feared what his work would do to her (and them). Happy ending to a sad story..though, it actually went the other way.
In any dry reading, Darwin went from an anglican, to a general christian, to a deist, to an agnostic.
-and lets recall for a moment the environment he was publishing in..he was very careful not to let the prevalent religious beliefs of the time find purchase in objection to his work..even though he knew that those beliefs could never coexist with it.
