Pretty sure even wikipedia's webpage said that most people interpreted the "end" of the calendar in the wrong fashion (I'm too lazy to go look at it again) but most of the Christians I've heard actually denounce the whole idea because it doesn't fit in with their prophecy.
However, a couple years ago when it was a hot button topic and a guy I was nosing around was looking into it all, I used it as an excuse to get my foot in the door. "[sigh] well...I guess I just have to jump your bones before then...." Okay, so not much of an excuse, and he wasn't fooled, but it broke the ice and now the door is always open.
