A little known fact about Tolkien:
Tolkien, played the banjo in a traditional jazz band called "The Thames Valley Cotton Pickers".
Now although none of this is actually stated in any of the official biographies, there are still people in Oxford who remember the great man. After a couple of pints of locally-brewed beer, he would give a sensational performance of "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like Me Sister Kate".
