I know a woman who went through that, I'll ask her fi she's willing to share her story here; though I think it was more an issue for her family than it was for her Bible college friends.

RE: Looking for stories
I can well imagine Tolkien sending little notes to all his colleagues at Pembroke, running something like:

'If you happen to know what it's like to carry a magic ring across the known world for the purpose of dropping it into a magic volcano, please let me know.  Cordially, John'.

RE: Looking for stories
Not all fiction writers write about fantastical things that couldn't possibly happen IRL. Someone who has Mark Twain in his signature should know this.

You clearly haven't read much Twain.

-A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court

-What Stumped The Blue Jays

-Journalism In Tennessee

-Tom Quartz

-The Diary of Adam and Eve

-Extract From Captain Stormfield's Visit To Heaven

-Cecil Rhodes And The Shark

-A Horse's Tale

Loads more.  In fact, I think a case could be made that Twain's stories (when not more or less autobiographical) are more likely to be fantastical than not.

RE: Looking for stories
And yet his most famous works (Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, Prince and the Pauper, among others) are often pretty mundane. Sometimes he wrote stories about Americans from a millennium in the past getting thrust into the days of King Arthur, sometimes he wrote of encounters with the supernatural, sometimes he wrote about stuff he could have lived through in his early days in Hannibal, sometimes he even just wrote straight-up nonfiction accounts of stuff he saw while traveling the world, almost like realistic fiction is a perfectly valid method of writing stories. Hell, he even once wrote an account of a true story related largely verbatim from a servant.

A little known fact about Tolkien:

Tolkien, played the banjo in a traditional jazz band called "The Thames Valley Cotton Pickers".
Now although none of this is actually stated in any of the official biographies, there are still people in Oxford who remember the great man. After a couple of pints of locally-brewed beer, he would give a sensational performance of "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like Me Sister Kate".

True dat.

“Two years after I killed Blyth I murdered my young brother Paul, for quite different reasons than I'd disposed of Blyth, and then a year after that I did for my young cousin Esmerelda, more or less on a whim. That's my score to date. I haven't killed anybody for years, and don't intend to ever again. It was just a stage I was going through.”

That could, happen, did it? probably not.
Rev, chill out dude.

Exactly the fucking point I was trying to make. And honestly, the fact that you guys seem to be so opposed on principle to drawing on real life for fiction really makes me think you have no idea what you're even talking about. For fuck's sake, you could have redirected him to the Convert's Corner where he could probably find some material he could turn into fiction. Hell, I should have done that in the first place.
