Finally, some one agrees with me!***
I quite like The Shawshank Redemption. However I'm always been perplexed at how it keeps showing up on greatest movies list. I don't remember, was it made by Disney?
Before I go any further. Of course I realise such lists or subjective. I don't have the slightest interest in what some film critic says.
My list has changed and will probably change again. My top 100 includes:
Casablanca for being the closest Hollywood has ever come to making a perfect film.
Lawrence of Arabia, a film so good I've watched it once a year for the last 30 years at least. Quite often discover
something new. EG only recently, at the beginning, after the funeral, the clergyman says "Nil nisi bonum" I had to look it up. It means
"nothing but good" and is an abbreviation of which educated men at the time would have been aware. The full quote is" De mortuis nihil nisi bonum" .We use it as" don't speak ill of the dead", which is exactly what the smarmy clergyman had just done .
Roshomon directed by Akira Kurosawa. The bloke made some brilliant films. They include Kagemusha (Shadow Warrior) and Ran, which is based on Shakespeare's King Lear
There are some terrific films of Shakespeare's plays. Including A Midsummer's Night's Dream (1935), Polanski's Macbeth (1971) and Kenneth Branagh's Henry V (1989) There's also a current film based on the play (also wildly historically incorrect) currently on Netflix; "The King" I like it a lot.
And so it goes----Haven't even mentioned some of the wonderful films which have come out of China in the last 10 to 20 years.
