mRNA strikes again
Researchers comparing the DNA of a species of warm water octopus and that of a cold water octopus were surprised to find that there was hardly any difference at all even though each has special adaptations suited for their environment. A deeper look revealed that the specialization was the result of mRNA editing. During the growth process the edited mRNA is regulating the growth of the nerve cells. This causes the nerves of the cold water species to carry information slower allowing them to withstand lower temperatures.

The more we learn about how DNA works the more we understand that the actual coding genes do not account for many of the differences between species.
