RE: Weed
Legal but regulated is the key there, I think.

RE: Weed
Alcohol abuse =/= alcohol.

I knew this argument would be raised, but it's a complete fallacy. People cause these problems, not the drugs. Liberty shouldn't be abandoned because some people can't control their addictions.

The actual drug, or the act of taking it, has no affects on anyone but yourself.

RE: Weed
No one's equating the two, we're just putting stipulations on it.

Well then Napoleon misunderstood what I wrote, because he changed my talking about the drug not affecting anyone else to "the effects of drug abuse" affecting lots of people. They are two completely separate issues.

To say they are two separate issues is disingenuous. You wouldn't have drug abuse without the drug in the first place would you?

RE: Weed
No, but the fact is that they are two separate issues, just as owning guns and shooting people are two separate issues. Some people use guns responsibly, others use them to kill people. Likewise, some people use drugs recreationally and are perfectly fine, others abuse them and that leads them to abuse others.

The government treats alcohol and alcohol abuse completely separately, as we should with all drugs.

RE: Weed
I've smoked weed for almost 20 years
I have a good job, house, family, car, pets and am a productive & responsible member of society.
I've never harmed anyone, never stolen anything and unless you knew me really well you'd probably be none the wiser.
But I am a criminal according to the law
I voted yes by the way

Okay, here is a source, and apparently the cotton industry was just one of a few corporate players in criminalization.

http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1...425534/pg1

Quote:As we can see the cannabis is a flexible plant, multifaceted, and with different attributes. From this they can be generated from fuels and oils, to clothing and all kinds of fabrics, passing strings and, of course, role. However, precisely these benefits of the plant were that more incomodaban to the corporations that were frantically monetizing markets such as the supply of industrial paper, cotton, and hydrocarbons. Apparently, originally were mainly two corporations which turned completely to promote the prohibition of this plant: DuPont and the Hearst Company (owned by William Randolph Hearst who inspired the film Citizen Kane).

Apprently, also key to the criminalization was a man named Harry Anslinger. Here are some things he said to fan the flames.

Quote:“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.”

“…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”

“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.”

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing”

“You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.”

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

“In the year 1090, there was founded in Persia the religious and military order of the Assassins, whose history is one of cruelty, barbarity, and murder, and for good reason: the members were confirmed users of hashish, or marihuana, and it is from the Arabs’ ‘hashashin’ that we have the English word ‘assassin.’”

TL;DR?
It's total bullshit.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
