I'm guessing you know that isn't actually a quote, but a paraphrase of the full sentence. He never actually said that.

Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions. - Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right

When you factor in "heart of the heartless world", its not quite as negative as its usually made out to be.

The full quote is far finer than the abbreviation too, I should really get around to trying to read the full text.

If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?

I'm interested to see how varied political opinion is here...I've read a few threads in your politics area and from the sounds of it there are mostly liberals here, with a few crazy people (no ofense!!). I'm an anarchist (you can tell from my name), which means I agree with most of what liberalism as to say, I just think that a lot of liberals these days support capitalism, which is a failed system that does nothing to help the people in society that need it most. I think it would b better if we scrapped the economic system and started again with a complete anarchaic commune (anarchy-syndicalism) where the workers manage everything and we live by simply helping one another rather than charging people for help.

Sure I'll be able to jump into the discussions and talk (and debate!) more with you all.

HELL YEAH! Anarcho-syndicalism FTW!

P.S. - I wonder how many people will think you are a sock puppet of mine. I have pushed Syndicalism on this forum quite a bit.

I understand that such a part sounds not negative, but this part is the one that gets me "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature".

That to me puts most of it in context.

Good.

Go do something useful and stand in front of the window. We need some curtains in here.

He did say that. The "it" was a direct reference to "Religion".

A sock puppet is when someone has more than one account on a forum.

So you log in with the first account: "I support such and such"

Then you log out of the first account and log in to the second acct and paste "I agree with account 1"

Its one person looking like two people on a forum....

...and an/syns are never anyones sock puppets. LOL. I'd rather take a sledge hammer to some scabs windsheild than be some greedy fuckers sock puppet.

No, he did not. Its out of context. Its still anti-religion, but as I said, the full quote is quite poetic in nature, and deserves the full version, rather than the bastardised paraphrase.

Correctly, it should at least say "Religion is the ..... opiate of the masses". People just started leaving out the ..... (I forget what its called).

Anyway, if you like Karl Marx, I thought you'd be interested in that bit of trivia, if you weren't already aware.

I kind of dipped and dapped on Marx. Read the communist manifesto. Read a few anarchist critiques on Marx.

Ive been wanting to read "das kapital", but everytime I look at the book (3 volumes each the size of a dictionary), I decide to wait. LOL.

Besides, Im not a Marxist. He calls for a strong centralized and socialised bank and I call for all banks to be converted to bakeries (or something else nicer than the usury pushers). Marx called for gradual change from capitalism, to socialism, to classless society. Anarcho-syn calls for an immediate change from whatever state your society is in to a classless and stateless society.

Well, I can keep going....
