I have been watching an excellent documentary about the history of religion in the US.. Fascinating stuff.
Last night it looked at the foundation of Reform Judaism in the US. I learned a lot.
Then it looked the Scopes monkey trail, with protagonists William Jennings Bryant representing young earth creationists and Clarence Darrow representing the sane people, who lost that battle, but won the war.
I use the term 'sane people' intentionally. The programme uses actual accounts and court transcripts. There is a reinactment of a private exchange between the judge and Bryant. The judge expresses his exasperation with Bryant for arguing a position which no thinking Christian believes.
That echoes my existential attitude to young earth creationists. I don't hate them,or even dislike them. After all, I've never met the ones we have here. I am however, exasperated. I honestly find it hard to accept that a thinking adult could be as ignorant and stupid as those people seem to be.
American viewers can watch the full programme on PBS online.
