I drove through or near Essex when we were in England in the summer of 2008. We were on our own grand tour of gardens and drove from where we stayed in Cranbrook to visit Sissinghurst and Great Dixter all the way to Salisbury. On the way we stopped to see Nyman's castle and West green house. You guys really have some incredible gardens out your way. I definitely want to go back to revisit some and see many more on my bucket list.
stop reminding me. I was setting aside time to spend up Ace's way.

I'm a big fan of bog gardens that include pitcher plants, sun dews and venus fly traps. Looks like you have terrestrial orchids outside there too. If you ever get out to California I can steer you to lots of gardens to see, my own included of course.
I'll try to take some pictures of the Victorians around in Charlotte and Concord. Charlotte didn't have a real city planning scheme until about 20 years ago so a lot of stuff got fucked over.
Those carnivorous plants are native here. So're some orchids. I don't have much use or space for such things - I'm having a hard enough time juggling car issues with getting the shit to build my vegetable trellises right now, but eventually I'd like to have my own bog area when I get my own house. I'm betting the rhododendrons are what's making you think of Oregon. Niall posted awesome pictures from the Portland gardens. Wait till summer - it's unearthly here. Personally I can't stand our kind. We suck. Well that is a little harsh but I sure know my share of ugly Americans. Sometimes it feels like I'm related to a bunch of them. (Sure hope this apple fell plenty far from the tree.) I live in Berkeley, California .. across the bay from gay San Francisco. I like it here. We have natural air conditioning in the summer and don't get very cold in the winter. It is a foodie mecca, not that I indulge all that often. There is a big garden culture here and I'm a member of a bunch of horticultural organizations. I love gardening in this mediterranean climate. There are a lot of regional parks on my side of the bay, almost all of which permit dogs to be walked off leash which keeps my dogs and I very happy. I was born just south of here in Oakland at a navy hospital but as a navy brat have lived lots of places.
I moved a couple of weeks ago to the Bayside suburbs of Melbourne, in the state of Victoria, in the country of Australia.
