If prostitution was legalized

RE: If prostitution was legalized
The problem I have isn't the copyright itself, so much as it is how the contracts of recording artists are structured. To be honest, if I pay for a CD or MP3 download then I would like for the artist to get most of the profits. As it is currently structured, the artist gets around 5% on average. Hence, I pirate most of my music and go to concerts and buy authorized merchandise to support my favorite artists.

Many things are available for free online (or for cheaper, pirates gotta make money too)... this is called piracy. Most people would rather pay the artist for their work than visit some third party site and get it for free (along with whatever viruses that brings). Example: I could have just read the free version of what I linked in my last post, it was even on a first party source, but I bought the book anyway.

I am in favor of changing how things work. The current system stinks. There needs to be something though. The reason most people don't pirate under the current system is because it is illegal, and when things are illegal a lot of bad things come with that (like viruses)

While some people might support the artist, I believe that if piracy were illegal, it would kill artists, authors, creators, etc. Especially with digital materials. Why would you pay 10s or hundreds of dollars for software when you can go to a reputable free software distributor and get it completely legally?

It does seem to create monopolies with physical inventions. It seems to have a negative impact with digital materials however.

Illegality doesn't stop prostitution (or frankly much at all). People don't pirate stuff because they are too *honest*. If they could get over themselves... they would be pirating things just like the rest of us.

I paid more than $200 to buy my Wild Arms music from japan. I'd had it for years. It's simple: people pay for what they like. We even donate.

Also, the deregulation of the arts allows people to use current art to make better art out of it. Hell, how do you think Hollywood even came into existence? The societal benefit of not having patents/copyright is massive, even *if* artists take a small hit. Frankly, your little dream that artists make squat is ridiculous, most writers are poor as are most musicians. A rare few copyright a piece of music that becomes a major hit and sells far and wide and giving them a decent (even rich) living wage. Frankly, they needn't have copyrighted it in the first place: they still would have made a very generous living wage.

Now don't come back until you've read the link I posted, from start to at least about midway. I know that *I* couldn't put it down Tongue

This is true for some people. I, for example, detest the used games industry because the devs get little or no profit from it. When I buy from one of my big four favorite companies (Bioware, Valve, Bethesda and FROM Software) I always buy new, even if used copies are available. They make money from new copies. Not so for the cheaper used ones.

Except they already were paid for used copies, but I understand the intent Wink

*Late to the Party*

I think that Prostitution should be legalised, the "Ladies/ Guys of negotiable affection" should be protected and screened (medically) and their "clients" be screened also, a drivers licence will do, for this you will be assured of excellent "service" and the provider of the service will live to keep providing the "service" as long as he/she wants to.
