RE: About atheism

I was a Lutheran Christian before this, for many years. I never thought that the bible was the absolute truth or that Jesus was the son of god, but the indoctrination kept me going. When I finally decided that I was wrong, that my whole world view was based on a lie, it still took a long while still to cut all threads to my church. The day I did cut all those bonds, I felt vulnerable. I thought that the god I believed in would punish me for such insolence. For a day I walked around and thought lightning would strike me.

Well, it didn't.

A month later, I joined AF, and now, a year from that, I have never felt better.
I don't feel aloof, the world around me feels just as important as it did a year ago. Nowadays, I just see it differently. There's no one but me (and my fellow HUMAN beings), to judge what I do. I've never lost my purpose of life, which is, living for as long as I can to the best of my ability. I feel a sense of belonging, not by faith, but by the mere fact that we all are sentient beings and alive at the same time. It's a bit scary, but I'm the master of my own fate, if I screw up, it's my own fault. If I succeed, it's because of me (or the PEOPLE around me, not some deity).

It's a fearsome thought, but once you get used to it, you realize what possibilities lies ahead of you, what you are able to do (or not do) because of doctrine. You actually dare to say the phrase: "I don't know", if you don't, without unreasonable speculation. And you realize you matter as a human being, not as a mindless sheep.

I am alive and belong in this world, so do you.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
