I'll rephrase my question a bit....What is special or makes your city stick out a bit more?

Apart from one of the biggest sea harbours in the world, not that much. Smile

Rotterdam can be best compared to Liverpool in the UK, or Bremerhaven in Germany. Very industrious, lots of working class housing and flats, lots of unemployment, parts that can be best described as ghetto's. But also some very nice places to live, nice parks, a sense of unity and pride, a hatred for Amsterdam and Ajax in particular, and an excellent nightlife scene.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your book going to be about?
Atheism and all things related. Through writing my blog I've come across a load of new topics that I wish to write about.

I've never been to Amsterdam, but why is there hatred for it?

Thanks Adrian, I've always wanted to publish at least one book in my life time, but that's going to be a while before I get the time and chance to do that.....Smile

I've heard so many Christians tell me over the years to; "Just come with me to church" or "You don't know what your missing" or "Why can't just try to believe" or "Why are you being so close-minded" or "Have you tried to talk with someone about your loss" etc. etc. etc.

Just as you said, it's not a matter of "Choice" anymore. They don't seem to understand that it would be the same for me in trying to believe in Santa Clause all over again, but with knowing the truth. Just can't do it.........

@Leo

I've been to Amsterdam once.I thought thought it was pretty and quaint.I loved the Rijsmuseum and the canals. Not sure I'd like to live in a "quaint" city.

I must admit I found the junkies shooting up at a local fountain a little disconcerting. However,that was more than compensated for by rows of nice ladies modeling lingerie in large windows. One of them made rude gesture at my wife when she tried to take a photo.

Trivia:The culture shock was seeing large numbers of apartment windows with open blinds at night.

RE: ORIGIN
Most famous joke made by Rotterdam people:

Q: What is the nicest thing about Amsterdam?
A: The train to Rotterdam.

Amsterdam is great and all that, I have no problem with Amsterdam myself since I was never brought up in the Rotterdam area, but native Rotterdam inhabitants have been brought up with the "knowledge" that Amsterdam people are condescending towards Rotterdam people (and that is partly true) and of course that Ajax is the sworn enemy of Feijenoord, soccer history runs deep between the two clubs. Decades of Rotterdam doctrine is not that easy to stamp out if no-one bothers to start stamping.

I'm 23 years old, born and raised in Winnipeg, Canada. I like my country, but hate my city. It's a dream of mine to move to the US, preferably the West coast.

I took a year-long networking course at a technical college immediately after High School, learning a lot of Cisco stuff, as well as the nuts and bolts of Microsoft servers and networking from that angle. I haven't applied any of that or gotten any certifications, though.

I'm currently doing tech support at a call center, and I absolutely hate my job. I'm going to the University of Manitoba taking Computer Science, currently finishing up my second year. I'm taking a break next year, probably taking a course or two, and hopefully getting a better job for the year so I can pay for my remaining 2 years.

Hopefully after I finish my education I can emmigrate to the US and get a decent-paying job.

Right on Meatball...

My only advice here in the U.S. I can give you is don't move to California....Head straight to Seattle....lol

Don't get me wrong..I love California as a vacation spot...San Fransisco is so beautiful during the Fall and Spring....(Along with a couple of hours North of S.F. is the Great Red wood forest and lakes etc.) L.A. is nice during the summer and has a lot to do....San Diego has some really nice beaches and 1 hour South of there is Tijuana.

HOWEVER, I lived there long enough to know that I will never live there again, and about 99% of the people that have lived and moved from CA has said the same....I guess if you just want an experience for a year or two in trying it out..go for it...but everything that I just mentioned is all that is good about CA....(Well, one more thing would be a few hundred-thousand good looking ladies. But that's if you can get past all the plastic and caked on make-up)....lolol

@Meatball

What's wrong with Vancouver? It's where my mum was born and a place I've visited a few times.

I've also spent time in Seattle,which I also like a lot..

Why on earth ANYONE would want to migrate from Canada to the US is beyond me.

If I couldn't live in Australia,I'd live in Canada (BC).

padraic....I have to agree 1000 fold with you on your post. Don't get me wrong, I love my country and was born here, yada yada yada....(For your Nords out there, yes mother, yes mother, yes mother..LOLOL)

However, if it was possible at this moment in time, I would much rather raise my children elsewhere than where I am at currently. My oldest daughter has already stated to me she wants to go to College for one term in Italy. I told her that was the best thing she could ever do. Matter of fact, I encourage everyone that can spend a year abroad for college to do so....

I envy your daughter. I love most of Italy I've seen,especially the wonderful cities of Rome, Florence and Venice. It would be fantastic to spend a year there,especially if one spoke passable Italian. (mine is limited)
