Analyze JonB's Avatar

Analyze JonB's Avatar

I know there are many threads in many atheist forums discussing JonB's avatar already but I think it worthwhile to add another one here. Let's start with the well understood parts. First, we've got the partial movie title, from "Between God, the Devil and a Winchester", an obscure, misguided spaghetti western film. Gilbert Roland's character represents the Long John Silver role. Roland has an iron arm instead of a wooden leg but embodies the same mix of charm and baseness of the pirate captain. His charismatic untrustworthiness is a magnet and, on a surface level, leaves the viewer unsure as to which way he will ultimately turn. All so well and good, but, as a family adventure story with a firm moral position at its heart, it gradually becomes all too obvious which way he will finish up and the sacharine ending when it arrives undermines any pleasure we may have gained from him during the twists and turns of the story. Did this movie have some sort of profound impact on young Jon? And why does the avatar omit the phrase "the Devil"? Is this a tip of the hat to atheist community, or is it just to leave some space so we can see the face of the go-go dancer in the background? And who is she and why is she there? Note the contrast of the missing "the Devil" and a dancer dressed in pure white - a contrast of an angelic figure overcoming "the Devil"? Perhaps this is some sort of a signal of a lingering belief in a deity by Jon. And then we have the curious visage of actor Gilbert Rowland holding a pistol, born in Mexico with the name Luis Antonio Damaso de Alonso. After his mother died, he always wore a ring on his left hand engraved with her dying words to him: Hijo mlo, no te apures, no te asustes; adioa, alma mla. The English translation is: My son, don't rush yourself, don't worry yourself, good-bye, my soul. Yes, this is an intriguing clue. His eyebrows go up and down, his cheek shakes, and the constant puffing on the cigarette causing the tip to glow on and off. Simply a connection to the movie (the image is from the movie poster) but does it reveal something else? And finally we come to the flashing word "Draw." Is this simply a reference to the cowboy movie theme of a gunfight challenge, or is it meant as in to cause to move in a particular direction, or perhaps to sketch someone or something. Yes, the questions are many and the answers are few. Who will help with the analysis?

Perhaps jonb merely enjoys being a bit of an enigma?

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I find the avatar to be creepy. His face looks like it's behind hot air or something, what with half his face jiggling and all. Also, his nose grows larger, then shrinks.

We often think things silly that we don't understand, Annik. I think you can make a valuable contribution to unraveling the mystery Thinking

Excellent Gilgamesh, excellent! His nose does grow and then shrinks. It's Pinnocchioesque in suggesting that some sort of lie is being told, causing the nose to grow, and then a truth is revealed causing the nose to shrink again. But what is the truth, and what is the lie?

Dude, I'm sure you're right, that he does enjoy being a bit of an enigma, but what is the secret message, man?

Even Freud knew that a cigar is sometimes just a cigar. I wouldn't be so impolite as to actually say outright that this thread is little more than public masturbation, but that's not going to stop me thinking it.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Do you often think about me masturbating? I find that a bit disturbing.Confusedhock:

But to your main point, what's the cigar? These things just fell into his avatar at random, with no significance?

I'm still studying your comments Gilgamesh and I missed the significance of this particular statement earlier. His face does look like it's behind hot air, sort of a mirage effect, and tellingly the lapel of his jacket is shaking as if it is in a breeze. It suggests a large source of hot air is blowing from beneath him. Is this a message that he considers himself above the crowd, who are mindlessly spewing hot air? Or is he perhaps standing atop a volcano, trying to send a critical message to the rest of humanity before something terrrible happens? Hmmmm... Again, good work Gilgamesh!

I find it even more disturbing that you seem to feel the need to claim I said something I didn't, just so you can knock it down and score a point. If only there was a name for this kind of disreputable tactic...

Please read my words again. Here, I'll emphasise the relevant part for you: "this thread is little more than public masturbation".

As for the cigar analogy, does it have to be either some arcane multi-layered deep mystery or totally insignificant randomness? Couldn't it be that jonb thinks it looks cool or something? That's on the lines of why I chose mine. Why did you choose your own avatar? Because you wanted to use that picture, or some impenetrable universal mystery? Basically, what Freud and I were saying is that we think you may be over-analysing this, reading things that may not be there. Hey, just like you did with my previous post!

I was making a little joke, I hoped you would respond with LOL. I did not mean to offend you. Please accept my apology.

Well you're certainly taking the fun out of this, but to answer your question, I think avatar choices say something about the person, especially when they have been constructed from a variety of sources.

I identify with the character Walter from The Big Lebowski, that's why. If you know the character then you know something about me. What I want to know is what does Jon's avatar say about him? Since he's kudoing every post in this thread I think he's enjoying it as well, which was partly my purpose. If you don't want to take part, feel free to ignore it.

I'm not into Starcraft or LSD so I don't know the significance of this
