On the idea of 'never give up'.

I have always believed in the philosophy of never give up....
I have always used it as a rule of thumb and been countlessly disapointed whenever I put a book down or realise I have no talent for something and feel like quitting...stupid of me really.
About a week ago I thought: "If you never gave up in the sense that you never even gave up giving up...could you think of that as meaning you should usually persevere - especially if you feel the cause is a good one - but also be open to giving up?"
"Never give up. Also never give up giving up."
I'm very confused though, is this a contradiction or paradox?
Or simply a matter of semantics or something? I have no idea really; Absolutely barmy.
I've confused myself now.
Thoughts?
