I don't think of myself as having a particularly high pain tolerance, but perhaps I do... Compared to having my nipples pierced, tattoos are a walk in the park.

The one on the back of my neck wasn't bad at all. It may have just been the placement of the trampstamp. I'm nervous about getting the one on my foot, though.

Breathe... You can't help but feel the pain, just breathe with it... If it works for childbirth, it works for a tattoo.

Works in BDSM too. I've had a bit of practice since that tatt as far as pain management and holding still.

Not pierced anymore... I had kids and breastfed... Nipple rings pose a choking hazard to infants.

I have a foot tattoo which I got almost 20 years ago... it was an awful experience, even though it only took about fifteen minutes. Now it's a foot blob and I have to get it covered. I'm not looking forward to that day. I just got six hours worth of work done on my back... lots of vibrant, and extremely painful, colors. I hate the pain, but love the result.

OP, I like the idea of an owl. Keep in mind, colors are more painful than black. Lidocaine helps, but only works where the skin has been pierced already. Good luck!

What also hurts is fine detail - but it's worth it. I have a large, detailed tattoo on my bicep, which is not a particularly painful area, but 6 hours of work doing outlines and fine detail... I have a pretty good level of tolerance for pain, but after a couple of hours, I wanted my mama.
