The MST3K version of Manos helped it a lot, though.




Maybe that's what the bible needs....a guy and two robots sitting in the corner ripping it to shreds.

I've read the bible cover to cover, the KJV, and...you know what? You pretty much nailed it, Cap'n. It was the most tedious slog through some of the most uninspiring crap I've ever dealt with. The grotesque aspects of it are what began to turn me off Christianity of course but where it wasn't grotesque it was obscenely boring.

All that comes to mind at the moment is the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Hard to find much in the way of humor there. Generally though, I agree. Humans take themselves way too seriously.

The main attribute I think of when I think of the bible is just how boring it is. Many Atheists paint the bible as this book of horrors but in truth it's mostly just long and boring. It clearly shares attributes with other literature of the period. Most ancient literature is also fairly tedious. Clearly it's a product of it's time. I think that Christians who claim to find something special in it are basically lying or haven't read it. Large sections of ancient genealogy and poorly put together poetry, clumsy metaphorical stories make up a huge chunk of the old testament.

Christians will talk of these beautiful passages, but they are a miniscule part of the bible. It's mind numbingly dull. The new testament is likewise mind numbingly dull, and don't blame the translation. The Iliad far exceeds it in terms of actual good writing. Is this God's test of our patience?

This, actually, is exactly why St. Augustine (354 – 430) wouldn't read it. The thing is so damn basic that even the most boring person ever lived wouldn't find it entertaining.

Then again, the book isn't written for entertainment.

When I read the Bible, it is not like I am only reading the Bible, it is like I take time out of my day to spend time with God. God usually feels very close to me. God will talk back to me, I will ask God questions and God will respond back.

To attack someones mental state is a smear tactic which is remiscent of soviet propaganda techniques. Only people that are seriously cynical and dishonest attack peoples mental state using diagnostic criteria, an honest person would simply reason with them.

It is the dirtiest and most fallacious type of ad hominem attack.
