Quite a shame how people respond
|
So, if you tell a theist, "Your comments are irrelevant because you are just complaining about my use of language instead of actually addressing my posts, idiot."
And he replies, "Not at all - relevance to my sense of getting offended. " You would agree, right?
Ah, so you're getting serious?
I was being serious about my changing based on experience on what was going on. If I have to explain that again, I will. I was joking about the job thing. I do come on here to discuss things and have fun. I don't mean to get irritated, but it happens. I hope you understand that. But yes, I would complain about someone only addressing the 'bad' language rather than the argument - as you are picking on my joking rather than my responding seriously to something that has now been rather beaten to death. I referenced my joke about bacon and atheism in relation to the joke about my job simply to point out flippancy, nothing more. Explaining jokes sort of ruins them. I hope you understand that. Then apparently I'm not very good at detecting jokes. I thought that was serious. I wouldn't have asked all that if I knew it was a joke. :S Oh well. Better to have explained it than to leave me confused. (June 3, 2013 at 9:11 pm)Rayaan Wrote: Oh well. Better to have explained it than to leave me confused. definitely.
I expected a serious reply, though, since this question that you responded to was serious - but the joke will work for now.

I used to hate a few of my English teachers, though... this one of them had us do this fucking retarded 'branching' exercise and taught english phonetically. I remember that once she taught us 'I before E, except after C', and it pissed me off so much that I compiled a list of some 20-30 examples of where the rule is not true, and I gave it to her, and I asked her what about those. She thought I had too much cheek. I hate fat old ladies because of this woman, Mrs. Wales, and my sixth grade elementary teacher. And Wheeler, fuck her too. I have a serious prejudice against them because of my experience with them... and fat old ladies around the world haven't done shit to change what I think of them. Closest I've got is a fat 30ish-year-old lady, and I suspect she'll become like the others when she becomes old. Fuck granny's cunt. "Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never harm me" might contain a lot of bravado, but if that were true, we wouldn't read, go to movies or listen to the lyrics of a song. And certainly forums like this one wouldn't matter at all. I agree that words matter; of course they matter. Writers and speakers know how much of an influence words can have on people, and that's one of the reasons they spend so much time crafting and improvising their words, sentence structure, grammar, and all that stuff. Surely, poets know it also. Presidents and politicians are also aware of the power of words, and that's one of the reasons they put so much effort in preparing their speeches and debates. There is in fact a whole branch of study called rhetoric, which is an art of discourse that deals with language and which especially aims to to improve one's use of language so that they can more effectively persuade and/or manipulate other people with their words. There are plenty of books on rhetoric and I have read one myself recently. Rhetoric is something that teach us about the secrets of language and how to use to them to influence people's perceptions and feelings - at a subconscious level. Therefore, some people even consider rhetoric to be a type of "black science" which still continues today from the ancient times. It is also known that listening to or even thinking about certain words generates their own unique pattern of brain waves; different words create different brain waves. And certainly forums like this one wouldn't matter at all. Yeah, I agree that the "sticks and stones" phrase is not exactly true because sometimes words do have negative affects on others. But, I think that's the problem with some people; they care a little too much about what is said to them, which is not good, in my opinion. Yes, words affect everyone, but we shouldn't let them affect us so much so that we become all depressed or angry for days or weeks or whatever amount of time just because someone said something that we don't like, especially on an internet forum since you don't know these people in real life and since most people come here just to have some fun. With words, however, at least you have more control over that because you can sometimes ignore them or you can forgive them for saying bad things (and you can forgive yourself as well), or you can even return the insult if you want to. But if you get hurt by, say, a rock, tree, wall, paper, or by anything physical ("sticks and stones"), then you don't have as much control over the pain as you have with words. He was too outraged by the language and the verbal violence which had spread like a cancer. He couldn't take it and so he decided to close it down, even though it was the most active forum for atheists. But then, look at how he frequently answers in public. He is no model of restrain when it comes to use cussin' words. All in all, it has to do with self-discipline. Anyone can use the F-word, it's the easiest one to use when you want to tell someone to get lost. But as I said before, it has been overused and abused. |
