Dealing with infection just before going to Portland, and it's taking a toll on my mother's/my relationship even though it's a fairly minor issue.

Got word a couple of hours ago that Dad isn't doing well (best guess is it's hypoglycemia, a complication from his diabetes). He won't accept anyone's help, and nobody's real sure if he can get himself to the doc in the morning. Nor will he go to the ER, etc. He's proud, and stubborn. Mom is going down there in the morning to make sure he has transportation to the doc, if he'll accept the help.
He really hasn't been the same since his wife (my stepmom) passed away.

Sorry that should have read "Controlled Burn". It is a prescribed burning of our forests to reduce the fuel load before summer heat. Normally done about this time of year (weather permitting). Australian forested have evolved to burn as part of their reproduction cycles and as such we get rather upset when things get out of control hence "Controlled Burning" is used as a method of control over our forest fires....but even these can get out of control if the wind/ humidity/ etc is right

I think that many do not understand the need for our forests to burn, and just how bloody irritating it can be if you have respiratory issues.

Well, around here (Southern California), we don't purposely burn stuff (except for the arsonists), but we definitely have our share of fires.

What's really hilarious is that in Southern California you have many Eucalyptus sp that do not require arsonists or deliberate burns to ignite.
