Increasing number of jellyfish - result of overfishing.
|
Over the last several years the Florida Keys have been seeing larger blooms and for longer periods of time. Here we get Moon Jellyfish and Purtuguese Man-O-Wars. The Moon Jelly is not a problem if stung only once or twice, just irritating.
The Man-O-War, however, is extremely painful, and can shut down your respiratory system. I have seen the results and it looks like burn marks created by live electrical wires. I was talking to a man who work at the Nuclear Plant in nearby Homestead and said that every year they struggle with keeping the water intake pipes clear of jellyfish.

“I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's." - Mark Twain in Eruption
Well shit, we knew jellyfish numbers were going to explode even without over fishing. The acidification of our oceans would ensure that.
Here's a tip. If you like crab or lobster eat the fuck out of it now. They won't be around much longer. Red Lobster is going to shit itself. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/20...ocean-acid
Everything I needed to know about life I learned on Dagobah.
Fascinating stuffs thanks Germans.
I think we should learn how to turn the things into a power source. Farm them to near extinction and then move on to the next dominant. |
