I have no answer, but you might be interested in reading "Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea."

The book covers the history of zero in mathematics. I read it a few years ago and found it interesting.

It's the symbol used to represent the lack of a number of something as far as I know. Took people a long while to invent it for some reason.
