It was not as though he could have asked for a secular twelve step program, because his attorney most likely informed him to simply go along with whatever was offered in the beginning to appear more compliant. Pathetic, really, but that is how the imperfect justice system operates.
There is actually no such thing as a secular 12 step program. Something like 7 of the 12 steps involve God or a higher power. There are secular rehab facilities however and I don't know why he wasn't given the option of one of those. I think most courts have alternatives to 12 step programs. Seems strange and maybe just a way to bitch your way out of jail and into a lawsuit.
