Sorry, I suppose I should expand on what I said about vectors. Moving +1 foot backwards is the same as move -1 foot forward. So a negative quality is just a positive move in the opposite direction. So if you move +2 steps forward and 1 step back (-1 step forward) you end at +1 step forward.
For multiplication the same rules apply. If the temperature increases 4 degrees per day from day one to day 5, you have a 20 degree increase over a five day period. That’s the same as saying that the temperature drops 4 degrees (-4) as you count five days backwards (-5). It’s still a 20 degree increase over five days.
