HDMI and the PS3

HDMI and the PS3
Ok then.. I have a PS3 in my room connected to my TV via a 1 metre HDMI cable. All works well.

However, my son (Huw230) has an HDTV in his room and sometimes want to either watch blue-ray films or play his PS3 games there.

So, I connect his TV to my PS3 using a 10 metre HDMI cable. When he watches films everything is fine, brilliant picture and sound quality. However, when he tries to play games he gets the sound for the PS3 but when the actual games starts he only gets the picture and no sound.

What's that all about then?

I don't know much about this...other than whenever me and my bro use games machines/consoles of any kind, it has 3 different coloured leads. Red white and yellow, and one of them does the sound I think, and the other two picture. I can't remember which, but perhaps you should just make sure that one of them isn't faulty.

Sorry if I can't be much of a (or any) help Smile

EvF, HDMI is a single connector, aiming to simplify the whole process of A/V connections.

That's a weird problem though. Just to clarify, watching movies through the PS3 through that HDMI cable is fine, but games through the PS3 have no sound?

Maybe check the sound settings on the PS3, and make sure everything is set to Digital?

Yes, you're quite right. Trouble is though, when I switch back to the 1 metre HDMI cable then everything works ok which is why he plays all his games in my room unless we switch over to good old fashioned AV then he can play them in his room.

It's as though the 10 metre cable doesn't like games but does like films.

You might be experiencing a bandwidth issue, try setting the ps3's output to 720p.

I'll give that a go but why would it differentiate between games and films?

Im thinking either the resolution or the encrytpion method is different.

It has to be something to do with the difference between the 10 and the 1 metre HDMI cables but I'll try the resolution thing later (when he get off the PS3) and report back Smile
