I think you're attributing a level of thought to this process that the majority of christians just don't have: mostly, the excuses, the context crap, it's all just gloss over the fact that they don't care. If we didn't question it they wouldn't even have their excuses; their minds would just accept that one plus one equals two in this verse, and five in this other one, and over here in the new testament it's three point five.

Because god.

I guess I've always just been an "outside the box" type of guy and find it hard to dumb myself down to their level.

You are wrong. Significant alterations have been made in the texts themselves and there are differences between the Codex Sinaiticus and the Codex Vaticanus themselves.

As one example, the story of the Woman taken in Adultery was inserted into the gospel of "john" because someone thought it was a rollicking good yarn....not because it really happened!

If you don't know what the fuck you're doing, leave the artwork restoration to someone who does.

I, for one, welcome our new Monkey Jesus overlord.

You have Jesus the fulfillment of the Law and you have all those of other guys in there, most of them had the right idea most of the time. The Old Testament isn't as bad as all that, as far as the Jews are concerned that's the Torah their Holy book the whole thing.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.

There was a hysterical SNL skit about this, but I can't find it on youtube.

RE: Is It Just Me... Or?
Even some so called canonical Biblical are known forgeries and have known interpolations, some major. The ending of Mark's Gospel: added forgery. 1st Timothy (if I recall): not written by Paul or a scribe under him at all: false attribution. If it wasn't 1st Timothy, it was one of the other Pauline letters that made it into the Bible. And those aren't even taking into account the texts that reference portions supposedly non-canonical scriptures, or the known historical inaccuracies.

The Bible is known not to be anything like historically accurate throughout, or free from human errors and intentional changes after the fact. To say otherwise is to ignore the known facts in favor of dogma and fundamentalism.

Concentrate on what Jesus taught and did and cherry pick whatever you like from the commentary sections is a good rule of thumb.

They're just different translations, Catholics have a couple extra OT books in their Bible.

If you read what was left out you can see why they left it out.

Also these tended to be written a couple of hundred years later. They left out the Gnostic gospels where an evil God created the universe and secret knowledge of the real God will release you from his clutches as that wasn't really very orthodox.

Some of the Gnostic stuff was alright though if you're not taking it historically.

It's ALL alright as long as you're not taking it historically...
