Of course they have a right to protest. Freedom of speech is not to be denied to feckwits simply because they are feckwits. Some USian (I disremember who, but would be grateful if someone could source it) once mentioned that freedom of speech isn't freedom for the thought we love - which needs no protection - but freedom for the though we hate.

If the right of these eedjits to show up at funerals and spew their vile crap is denied, it will have to come with a punishment of some sort, likely fines or imprisonment. Speaking for myself, I would hate to see that happen. I want this pond scum out in the open so people can see them for what they are - a boil on the buttocks of humanity.

I share the sentiment about freedom of speech but am not sure that should extend to barging in on other people's funerals. It is obviously an emotionally charged time. If shouting "fire" in a theater is a lawful exception to freedom of expression, then the right to shout hateful things within sight or hearing of a private funeral service should be too. I disagree with the court's decision. As to what the consequence should be I would suggest an enormous financial fine the first time, followed by 90 days jail time for a second offense along with community service. After that, we should go draconian on their asses.

If the first amendment of yours serves as a support those who insult people who died for your country, I'd say that those soldiers died for an amendment that allows people to desecrate their memory. How sad, truly sad.
I still stand by my words. I can think of a thousand different deaths for traitors. You only have to pick one and uphold the memory of your troops.

Another angle on why the WBC's actions should be limited concerns the right to privacy. I can't legally bury a loved one on my own property. So if I must bury on government sanctioned grounds, I should at least be able to do so in privacy. The WBC is not entitled to storm into my living room and shout their nonsense. Why should I have to endure it during what should be respected as a private affair, where attendance is up to the grieving family.

Freedom of speech is important but must be balanced against other important freedoms.

Totally. So many of these fundamentalist nutters wear a smirk that betrays the fact that they think they speak for god. The Westboro baptists just take it a step further in thinking they act for god as well.

I think they are required to stand outside the cemetery grounds to protest- but they are still visible and audible many times.

Yeah, the WBC is really bad, but there are worse groups out there. The WBC does what any christian group does. Take the parts of the bible they agree with, and go with it. You can't follow the whole bible, because (despite what christians say) there are too many contradictions.

They seem to be following a more old testament path, so I don't know why they're anti war. I guess being anti war is part of the new testament that they follow.
