Except that "god" isn't and wasn't a name, any more than "thought" or "dream", it's a description of a concept.
All that happened is that the church chose to ignore the rules of grammar when referring to their central concept in what can only be described as an act of arrogance.
In a similar vein they attempted to redefine the word "christian" as meaning "good" during the 19th century.
