My only thoughts on the subject were that the bible is more than likely a great work of fiction depicting good morals and a serene peaceful way of living life, albeit expressed through fiction, which would require the use of symbolism, plot development, character development, and theme. The bible is written in a form that encompasses all of these, so I thought that it could very well be work of literature.
Haven't read much of it, have you?

Quote:bible is more than likely a great work of fiction depicting good morals

Occasionally it does depict that....but mainly in practice only to other adherents of the same line of bullshit. "Others" beware.

No I haven't, it's much too boring in my opinion.
There are instances in the bible that contradict my state of learning good morals and what not, such as the book of job(which was referred to my by a dear christian friend who claimed it was a great scientific glimpse of the bible, don't know what she was talking about there being any science in the story of job, I certainly couldn't find any)
In the book of job god and lucifer(all in favor of ruling the world say "I") converse about God's dear little tool, job, God claims that job will still remain loyal to Him even if He Himself took everything that job loved(but God) and owned.
So God thinks its a great idea to put this idea to action and He proceeds to slaughter Job's cattle, take the lives of Job's family, and make job's plot of land look similar to the surface of the via flaming hellfire. So no, God does not only demonstrate good morals, He demonstrates morals similar to those of a dictator. He apparently does what he wants when he wants, while disregarding human life and it's value, and God lessens the value of his followers to mere dogs in this situation, for He only sees and attempts to find the ways in which they will be loyal to him.

Here is a graphic, but well summarization of the book of Job.

So you read books by watching South Park? That's what it appears.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

The bible actually isn't just one book, but a set of books written over a couple thouusand years or so. I'd say some are excellent literature while others are not. I wouldn't mind teaching an English literature course on the bible. I don't see why thinking it's true would take away your appreciation of it's literary value.

" the Bible" is not a work of English literature but the translations are. there is only one translation that is worth studying from the point of view of Literature and that is the king James version which is probably the most important work to date in shaping the Written English language. Studying the bible also is a necessary part of Early Modern Studies since it was the standard codified ethics of the period.

Good points. And you're right, the bible was written in Hebreew and Greek, so it's not really English literature.
