My frustration with "Strong Female" Characters
January 10, 2014 at 7:19 am
(This post was last modified: January 10, 2014 at 7:20 am by BrokenQuill92.)
In today's media why in order to have a strong female character does there need to be such a hatred for traditional female roles. Why can't the strong female character not like getting dirty? Or think pink is pretty? Have a love for shopping? Or squeal over sparkly things without being called stupid? It seems to me now being a strong female character means being a man with boobs.

Sad to say, men still set the script. It's no surprise that a strong personality is judged by male standards until society applies equality of esteem to all the roles people play it will be ever thus.

Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken."

I like the female characters from Game of Thrones. Strong and feminine characters seem to be stuck in sci-fi and fantasy at the moment through.

I like Lyra from 'His Dark Materials'. She's one tough cookie.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Some tough females do like shopping or whatever. We seem to have just gone way to the opposite end in an effort to make these strong women. Sometimes there's this strong independent woman with a total aversion to children, though sometimes you have a stay at home mother who's still obviously in charge around the house. Most of these sitcoms may have a woman that cooks and cleans, but if the men start getting out of line she will give them a stern look and they shut up and sit down. The Disney movie Brave is a recent example of this kind of woman that teaches her daughter womanly duties, but can quickly end a brawl in the throne room.
It just kind of depends on what the director or author thinks a strong woman should be. Whether it's a house wife with an iron will, or a business woman who is cut off from emotion and domestic duties.

I hate pink.
I love to cook and wear heels.
I hate pink.
I wear pink tones of lipstick, but not on my clothes unles it's a special kind of new pink.
I hate pink.
I love to do my hair and paint my nails.
I hate pink.
I play soccer, but wear cute underwear to feel feminine.
I'm not a man with boobs, yet I don't squeel at the sight of anything other than chocolate bock or bacon.
Why does pink have to be traditional? Sigh.

It's boobs that count, not the squealing, the excessive fastidiousness, the bad taste, and the shallow consumerism.

Ideally, strong female characters would be as diverse as real life strong females. The only show off the top of my head that I can think of which achieved an awesome balance is Avatar the Last Airbender. All the females could fight, Katara was motherly, Toph a tomboy, Mai a dark brooding type, Azula dominated in a masculine manner, and then Ty-Lee who wore pink and was all cutesy.
On the subject of pink - it's way overdone on female characters and yet absent from a lot of strong females, and I don't understand why we can't just have a reasonable amount of pink instead of overdoing or undervaluing it.

Avatar had really good characters. That's true. Characters should always be diverse, since real people are diverse. Fitting people into a stereotype might make some feel more familiar with something, but life just isn't like that.
