Morals

RE: Morals
Rockthatpiano06,

I think there is an obvious other angle to counter the argument. Your 'guy' is using an ethical argument (relativism leads to nazism and we don't like that) to derive from it that moral must have divine origin. This is a basic misstake, known as the naturalistic fallacy. The fact that some explanation has more esthetic appeal can never be a causal explanation of why things are what they are.

I said it wouldn't be possible to really live a giving life. If I knew you in real life this would be much easier. It's too easy for people to say they're good over the internet.

Quote:Do you only give to get?

I give because people take.

Quote:What about give to give?

Giving to give is easy when you have too much or more than your share. It is important where your giving is directed too. I've seen guys buying girls drinks at the bar - they would claim it was just giving for giving's sake. I've seen atheists doing work in the community - to get their name out...for future business. (Once they felt their name was out, the community work dropped off dramatically.)

Quote:Not the decent people. Some people actually care, and some people actually care regardless of if they always get treated perfectly in return, and regardless of if life is "fair"... fair in the "Godly" (almost certainly non-existent) way you expect it to be.

Some people do care, but not the types that make a point to deny a Judge. I think a person who cared would hope that God was real, regardless of whether He can be proven or not. I choose to live as if I will be judged for all of my choices. Responding strongly to the unfairness in the world is an important part of that...

Quote:Just because society can change when a dictator gets enough power, doesn't mean that morals aren't society-based. There are always setbacks, however large.

The point wasn't to say that society-based morals do not exist - it was just to show how flimsy they are.

Quote:The 20th century also had a lot more dangerous weapons and arms than any previous century.

I agree.

What? You are essentially saying that charitable acts are better when you believe in God because God is on your mind? That is absurd. In fact, this kind of thinking is MORE damaging. If you're willing to suffer because that makes you "holy" and you will go to heaven, then you won't try to improve. Mother Theresa was an abominable woman who would rather watch people suffer and die in the name of God rather than actually try to give them medical attention with the MILLIONS of dollars she received in charity.

No. I said people are more enabled to be charitable when God is on their mind - theoretically. I know I am much more able to focus on others and more capable of improving because of because my faith in God. I'm much less likely to worry about myself. Also, my goal isn't to get my butt into heaven (or keep it out of hell) - it is to be a servant of God because I see Him (and His way) as the only hope for this world.

I don't have a clue what the bold sentence is supposed to mean, really. If someone is truly holy they won't need to improve, they'll just need to keep up the very hard work (which includes being charitable and so on).

Mother Theresa is not God or even a role model to me - I don't know much about her or whether there is truth in your allegations. I won't research it now either.
