Fatphobia?

RE: Fatphobia?
I don't know if there's a fear of the overweight (though, as shown by a number of disorders, there is certainly a fear, in some, of being overweight), but there's a hatred among some.

I've encountered people being attacked - verbally, at least - for being overweight, however.

I know this may be a non-popular response, but I think you choose to be heavy or overweight. I understand that some people have harder struggles with weight than others, but you make all the choices of what foods go into your mouth.

If people could choose their skin color, would that make racism justifiable? The special pleading used make fatphobia acceptable is pathetic.

I have seen my mother gain weight due to her meds for years. Fuck people who have judged her.

I also know people who are big due to what they eat. Not my place to judge their reasons. I don't know the details.

I have, however, had to sit with clients and hear them talk about their misery every time people bully them about their weight. I know those details. They suck.

People who gain weight from meds and such do have legit reasons and struggles with their weight. Of course, my heart goes out to them.

Unfortunately, when people see them on the street, they don't know their circumstances, and judge them strictly on appearance as most people do.

I have seen at my work, many women bitch and complain and talk about dieting constantly. They never follow through with it, and just continue to whine about it. So I have a hard time feeling sympathy for those.

True for some, but certainly not for all.

Couldn't disagree more.

Skin color is an immutable trait. Thus judgment on it is considered wrong as there is nothing that can be done about it.

On the other extreme, embracing a political ideology is a concious knowing decision and thus can be judged.

Being fat, except in the very few cases of genetic predisposition, is more akin to bad habits and addiction.

Now, can you judge addicts like political ideologies can be judged or not judge at all like skin color?

I warrant it is in between, and thus can be judged.

The degree to which you can judge has to be determined however.

People are just unrelenting about making fun of people they perceive as fat (especially women) - how many times have you heard jokes about Kirstie Alley or Rosie O'Donnell? It's juvenile and strengthens the patriarchy. Personally, I've dated one overweight girl and one skinny girl. The one with a few extra pounds was very comfy to rest on. The skinny one had too many bones sticking out which friggin' hurt, and she seemed so fragile, like I would break her. I'll take the fluffy one every time.

I could really care less if someone doesn't like me because I'm fat. I like cookies...big deal.
