If we had a true libertarian system, nothing could stop businesses from becoming the government.

Hell, they're virtually he government already. I mean, they already skirt around the law and on the rare ocassions that they are actually called on it, they never seem to get much more than a slap on the wrists. The only millionaires that ever get in trouble are the ones who screw over other millionaires (like Bernie Madoff and Ken Lay). Then they buy up all the media outlets to make sure nobody is talking about how they've screwed the system against everyone else.

The lobby machine has made it so the needs of corporations come before the needs of the people.

Why do you say that, the government would still be there, we would still have a elected assembly, just they would not interfer directly in the free market. A educated and vested public with good free market competition is far more effective then having the government being involved.

The state I live in (Washington) has a minimum wage higher than that required by federal law - at 9.31 per hour, it's the highest in the nation. There are at least a few states that have a state minimum wage for non-tipped employees that is lower than the federal minimum.

A government which can't interfere with the 'free' market is a government certain to fall victim to it. The 'free' market would destroy competition because competition is not in the interests of any individual company in any market. The absolute best we could ever hope for in this situation would be to blindly and dumbly hope that every corporation would agree, against their own benefit, to operate ethically, because realistically, there is no force on earth that could compel them to. Honestly, I'd almost rather take my chances on God existing.

Unfortunately, that ain't gonna happen. Survival of the fittest even applies to corporations. The companies that are ethical would be instantly squashed by the unethical companies.

But, as long as we're applyin the rules of evolution to companies like that, let's take a look at the governments role in this. See, survival of the fittest says that the organism (or company) that is best suited to its environment will survive. What the government can do is change the environment so that the ethical companies are more suited to survival. Set strict rules they have to follow, enforce those rules and when they're broken, give them harsh enough penalties to prevent future rule breaking. Laizze-faire capitalism has created an environment where corrupt companies are more suited to survival.

Listen the only force that keeps a corporation in check is another corporation.
