My friends won't let me name any of my future children

I went for an old school classic for my daughter. I was set on Dean if she was a boy, and a lot of people gave me crap for that.

I don't understand english names, not a lot of freedom and the only way to be normal is to be boring. Chinese names are different, we put characters together to make names, not pick from a list. I just don't understand english names and I don't think it's a good idea, so many people have the same names. Nothing is unique.

All those names will go out the window once the child is born, is my thinking. You will get a sense of what the child should be named. I am certain my girl (first born) should have been named Amba-Jade..... she got Lisa instead, so don't allow anyone to dictate to you honey.

Name your kid whatever you want to name your kid; unless you friends are genetically linked to that kid they get no say.

As for a "normal" boring name versus a unique-snowflake name, it's entirely up the kid to be able to handle a unique name but be aware that if you choose something crazy that kid will be plagued with never having their name pronounced correctly or spelled correctly, so if you go the unique-snowflake direction maybe pick a name that has a inborn nickname that's not so weird: a know of a baby named Leonidas (a coworker's grandson) - supremely weird (*ahem* unique-snowflaky) name, but with an easy in-built common but still pretty unique nickname of Leo. A kid with a name typical or "normal" name like John or Sally might be inclined to complain that you didn't name them something more unique or interesting, so you're probably damned if you do and damned if you don't.

With that said, please don't name your child Hermione. I know you're an HP fan, and you probably love the name and the character, but a gazillion girls born between 2000 and 2020 will be named Hermione so what seems right now to be a unique name and a tribute to your favorite character will end up being "Mommy, there are four other Hermiones at my school!"

Naming a kid cloud or rain might just get him beat up. I'm sure you like it, but your friends might just be thinking in the best interest of the kid.

So Cloud might be a bit fluffy for a boy but what's wrong with Rain?
