Eventually something like this will have to happen regardless. I'm also skeptical, since the most that's happened in the last 5 years is a slowing in the increase of military spending. However we just don't have the money to carry on with endless wars and endless spending.

Interestingly I got to play with a full British Army Kit including back pack and body armour this afternoon, Weighs a ton, no wonder soldiers keep getting knee trouble. The armour can stop several rounds from an AK47 in the same spot apparently. so is probably worth the knee trouble. Carry on. You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid. Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis.
The upcoming bitch fest will come from both parties, the same as it was in the last two rounds of base closures and large program defunding efforts. Democrats and Republicans in districts that stand to lose jobs will again ignore recommendations from the Joint Chiefs and Secretary of Defense and scream to keep producing shit we don't need.
This "pre-world war II" claims are all conservative baiting, anyhow. The military currently spends more than 5x more than China yearly anyhow. This will hardly be a dent in the overall size or power. The unit efficiency pre WWII doesn't even compare to now. We didn't have drones, nukes, or the Air Force pre WWII.

I know, but the point is that the power projection now utterly dwarfs what we had then. We don't need as many units to project the same power. couldn't take off from Kansas and drop JDAMs on target in Afghanistan then turn around and come home.

I'll be amazed if this actually happens. Defense contractors already pour a lot of money into political campaigns, but if this ever starts to pick up steam, they'll just pour more and more money into the campaigns of politicians who will stop it. In the shape our current democracy is in, I don't see this changing until either we make some serious reforms about campaign finance or another indutry has a vested interest in changing things. The only industry I can think of who might make more money if we cut back on military would be private security firms like Blackwater.

We will have another terrorist attack and suddenly the sleeping dumbasses will be patriotic again.

They're gonna give us a new enemy we need to fight. We had the USSR and commies for 50 years and when that enemy stopped being an enemy, all we had to do was wait a decade or so and we got terrorists. If a vague idea like terrorism stops being the enemy, they'll whip us up a new one. I just wish the voters would pay enough attention to the system and actually learn about how politics works so that we could change things and eliminate corporate ownership of our government.
