Ok I admit it
RE: Ok I admit it
Damn. I feel as if you guys have destroyed every argument me or my parents can come up with. But I don't get it, if there's no evidence whatsoever, why do so many believe in this specific, supposedly fictional God?

Because people aren't perfect, and in the past it was an easy way to explain things we didn't understand in a way that made us feel good. It's a comforting fantasy that has been manipulated and altered over the years to be resistant to criticism by people who gained power and money by taking advantage of the faith of others. It's a conflux of a lot of different reasons, really.

Here's fun. Ask your parents why they believe. Good odds the first answer will be "because it's true". So WHY do they think it's true.

Almost invariably it will come back to a personal experience.

It's almost never someone else's personal experience.

Because the church has a slick and practiced ploy to emotion and inner guilt and uses strong peer pressure to stick to the con.

What if I don't believe and I'm wrong, and burn in hell? The fear of hell is why I'm so concerned about not sticking with my faith, nothing else.

And we're back to Pascal's Wager. Seriously dude, you need to let go of this.

If you're afraid of a hell that you have no reason to think exists, then there's no reason, logically speaking, to not be afraid of all the other hells you have no reason to think exist. And I'm not just talking about other religions, either: I'm talking about every possible iteration of hell. Are you afraid of going to the hell specifically for people who are afraid of hell?

If not, why not?

You know, these things take time, esp. with indoctrination. You don't have to decide anything now.

Once you solidly realize that hell is from of some mid-east writer's imagination and no more real than a hell of my making, soon you'll begin to realize that if a hell truly exists then human's don't know a damn thing about it. We only know about the stories we make up ourselves. Then, once you let that soak in, you realize that there is no reason for a hell to exist anywhere, it was simply a fear instilled by story writers to scare the gullible.

I often have trouble evaluating things for myself, and when I see that so many believe, it feels like there has to be something that makes them believe that we can't see, how can it just be because they were told so as a child?

Oh, but generally speaking, if you think about it, it isn't as simple as just "they were told as a child."

This is a thing they've never been told even might be wrong. This is a thing, as you yourself so aptly demonstrate, that they are essentially threatened into believing with physical harm far beyond anything we could possibly imagine. This is a thing that they go to church every week for their whole lives, in some cases, specifically to have this belief reinforced.

Surely you can see the extent to which the practices of your religion enforce and encourage belief in it without ever investigating or paying attention to things that contradict it?
