Questions for other jewelry makers
I'm new to working with chain, is there a way to get smooth edges once I pull apart an link and push it back together? They never feel quite like they were before.

How are you pulling the link apart? Are you pulling the ends directly away from each other, or are you "twisting" the ends the create the gap? I do the twist method because it's easier to just twist them right back where they were. I use two pairs of needle-nosed pliers, too, because the points are small and more easy to maneuver.

Twisting. It feels like the metal has gone soft after I twisted back into place, I always get it back in the position it should be but afterwards the metal never feels quite right. After the edges are back in place there's always this "snick". Like you I'm using the smallest possible needle nose pliers.

Try wiggling, not twisting. Metal gets softer as you use it, then harder. If you only give it a twist, the metal will only soften. If you wiggle it into place, it will harden up a little.
