We've got something similar to what your talking about at my store, we use it to make paint matches. The way it works though is you need to have the part where the camera is recessed completely flush with the object you're trying to match, otherwise you'll get issues with lighting (incandescent vs florescent vs natural light). The camera is also equipped with its own camera flash and is already calibrated to the light from it. It takes a few pictures of the object, creates a formula for each picture, and then averages the to formulas together. Its pretty damn accurate, it gets our paint formulas down to 1/128 of a fluid ounce. So I bet you could program it to read out specific color names instead of formulas.
