Christian humility

I've encountered a few but not many, especially among the Abrahamic religions. You're more likely to encounter humble people among the Eastern religions and philosophies.
But then, I think most people have an ego they like to stroke at times, especially if they can't get anyone else to stroke it for them. Everyone likes to feel special now and again. Here is the first one, from lek, claiming to be as christlike as he can be (humility and all) lek Wrote:I follow the teachings of Jesus. He was brought up as a Jew and was circumcised according to the Jewish law, but he never commanded that we be circumcised. In fact, the main reason that he was crucified was that he upset the Jewish establishment by teaching the people that they didn't have to follow the provisions of the old testament law. He broke the law at times such as healing on the Sabbath. I don't know if he ate pork, but he drank wine at the last supper, though there's no reports of him getting drunk at any time. I see this as claiming to be humble seeing as how it was one of jesus's central teachings. Salvation comes from humbling yourself to admit you are a sinner who needs Christ and the salvation He gives. it's been a hard choice for many here, some have given up what they had received. Earlier you said salvation was a hard thing, now you're saying it doesn't seem to be much of a sacrifice, you need to come to some kind of agreement with yourself.

Seems like a claim that the vast majority of Christians here have made frequent claims of humility. Religionists in general have the mental perversion that the creator of the universe has singled them out for special notice, special treatment, special reward. This automatically puts those outside the group in the category of 'not quite as good as us'. If others WERE good enough, God would include them for special services. First of all, I did not say that all religions do so - I specifically said 'Religionists in general...'. Secondly, I agree completely with your point that people, irrespective of religion, view outsiders as inferior. No argument at all. But this particular thread was regarding Christian lack of humility, and by inference, Christian pride. Pardon me for mentioning religion in a thread about religion. Won't happen again. Lastly, I did not say that religions encourage this particular outlook: I said (or at least implied) that it is a behavior of religionists. Thanks for your careful reading of what I posted. We must do this again sometime. Boru

I don't remember exactly what post I was answering, but I think he said that if I am a christian that I should be circumcised because Jesus was. I was saying that I followed his teachings and he didn't command that christians be circumcised. He also mentioned eating pork and consuming alcohol. I do try to be humble, but that isn't what I was talking about here. That's the problem when you take quotes out of context. |
