Should someone point out that divorce rates are lowest amongst atheists and highest amongst fundamentalist Christians?

That could be explained by the fact that there are a lot less atheists than Christians; this argument can also be said for the prison statistic that people like to throw around. A statistic comparing the divorce rate among only atheists and only Christians would be a much stronger argument. I'm not saying that atheists do not have the lowest divorce rate and that Christians do not have the highest, but the gap is probably less than those misleading statistics show.

I said divorce rates, not number of divorces, so your argument of "less" makes no statistical sense. Rates don't take into account the numbers of divorces, only the percentages of marriages that end in divorce.

Also, the prison statistics is most likely an error or bad handling of statistics, as I wrote in my article dispelling the myth of the "less than 1%". http://atheistblogger.com/2009/03/13/ath...the-facts/

I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you meant out of the entire population, x% were divorced Christians and y% were divorced atheists. But what I now think you meant is that only within the atheist community, y% are divorced.

Basically mate: For an equal number Marriages amongst Atheist and Christian couples, a higher percentage of Christian Marriages end in divorce compared to Atheist Marriages.

No it could not. The RATE of divorce across the the entire population of my country is around 50%. (one in two) 'Lower rates' mean proportionately fewer and are unrelated to to population size..However,to claim atheists have a lower divorce is meaningless.In my opinion atheists are not a group with definable common characteristics. Therefore, no meaningful inferences may be drawn about atheists as a group.. Correlation is not the same as causation.

Of course we're including the 90% of people who claim to be Christians yet never go to church except for said 'marriage'. And what are atheists doing getting married anyway? They're hypocrites already - obviously compounding the hypocrisy carries a greater stigma

2. How are you defining Christian here? the 90% of people who claim to be Christians apparently don't fit whatever definition you're using so how, then, are you defining 'Christian' exactly?

oh... as someone who actually follows christ and acts on that - not some cannon fodder that thinks they're a christian because they think they live in a christian country and one/ some of their family may have been and they were brought up as a christian and they prayed a few times and read the bible
