What is a Poe?

RE: What is a Poe?
It's basically a troll, but the good Poes are at least tolerable if they're not denying that they're poes.

Most fail miserably, but occasionally ...

Whenever you are inclined to look at someone's posts and say "no one could be this stupid" there is a chance that you are reading a Poe.

Or Woodie.

I'm thinking the idea might be for a fundamentalist to not realize they are being made sport of by someone seemingly more strict and obedient to the lord than they are.

I'm not of the opinion too many of the religious zealots would come and post here from the viewpoint of being outrageously atheistic to punch some buttons, as it where.

I'm new here, however, and if it does happens I'd appreciate being apprised.

On the whole, and yes this is a generalisation, it tends to be much easier for a person outside the religious bubble to assume the persona of a zealot, than for the zealot to act as a non-believer, merely because of the freedom on thought and behaviour; combined with the training camp of sheer overwhelming fundy examples gracing the net. Much like a certain classic (ie proper) Star Trek episode, in which it was easier for a civilised man to pose as a brutish despot than for the brute to act civilised.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

He he.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

I also note, the government makes no test of sincerity of religious beliefs. So posing situations of outrageous fundamentalist thought and conduct to the federales is legally just as valid as the pope (for purposes of this topic) making a sincere statement of belief* for the church.

And, Poe even commented (IIRC) somebody, somewhere, does in fact sincerely believe virtually everything that can be made up and trotted out to make the fundies look (more) ridiculous. No matter how outrageous something might seem, if there is scriptural backing for the claim, the claimants sincerity is irrelevant.

IANMTU, the sister of a friend of mine did in fact marry her rapist. Her motivation was not explicitly the Biblical injunction to do so, but upbringing and cultural factors entered into the decision. (mostly, IMO, if she married the guy, it would not have been 'rape', even though it clearly was). So my point is, almost unbelievable conduct does occur, and whether or not the scriptural requirement for that conduct is the reason for it, it does occur, and can be cited to advance AF interests.

*leaving for another topic whether or not the pope is EVER sincere
