Godparents

Godparents
So, I've been having kinda a debate with myself xD. This is more for people that grew up in a semi to really religious family but then went atheist.

What do you think about your godparents? What does the word godparent mean to you? I was raised in a Catholic envirnoment and they were basically your parent in "spirit". Now, I think of them more as people that guide me sometimes and help me when my parents can not. But, I still call them my godparents. What about you guys?

RE: Godparents
I love my godparents. They were my parents' best friends when I was born 37 years ago. We moved around a lot, and when my parents got divorced, we lost touch with them, but a few years ago my mom ran into my godfather at La Guardia airport (totally random). Now, my mom and step dad hang out with them all the time, which means now I get to spend a lot of time with them.

The way it was always explained to me was that if something ever happened to my parents, my godparents would step in.

My parents told me the same thing. I'm one of the godparents of my oldest niece. Albeit not for the same reasons. I think I was just the only option available at the time. To be honest being an atheist with no interest in children kind of undermines the whole thing.

I had 3 I think. My uncle, his ex and my dad's best friend back then. I see nothing of my dad's friend or my uncle's ex but me and my Uncle are pretty close. Though being family means more than the whole godparent deal.

My godfather had a heart problem when I was about 6 or 7 and then I very seldom met her wife, my godmother... I don't think I can identify her nowadays...
Still, I think they were good people. His death came way before his due time.

My godmother went out of the picture fairly early in my life. My godfather was a celebrity, but I never grasped how famous he was til I was in my early teens. Terrific man in every way.

While he was alive, I never much thought of him in 'godfather' terms, he was always 'Uncle Tommy', even though he was no blood relation - my father's best friend, so he would have been 'Uncle', regardless.

I don't think I have godparents? What if you don't know if you have godparents? This is a new concept to me.

Ask your parents if you have godparents - they'll know.

My family were Catholic, so godparenting was more or less inevitable.

My folks stayed in touch with them. But I never felt I had a special relationship with them beyond what I had with other adults who were friends of my family.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god.  If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

OK. I'm sick of thinking about the word "Tom" now.

Actually, having Tom Waits as a godfather would have been pretty awesome. And perhaps Patti Smith as godmother.
