Do you know about apple trees?

Do you know about apple trees?
I recently discovered that I have an apple tree behind my house. Who knows how long it's been suffering out there with no love or attention Sad
Its apples are small and sad looking. I want to nurse it back to health. I mean,to be completely honest it's for selfish reasons. I just like apples.
Someone please givez me apple tree advice Big Grin

What caused it to become unhealthy in the first place?

I'm afraid I don't know anything about apple trees. Maybe someone threw an apple core into your yard, and it took root somehow. I've lived in places where people throw stuff out of their vehicles all the time. Damn litterbug infestation.

Anyway, I'm sure you can look up what you need on the internet.

Do the leaves or bark look unhealthy? If not, you probably have a crab apple and the apples will probably stay small. Crab apples are very tart and make good pie and good dried apple but poor eating.

Did you know that all the apple varieties are grafted and that most wild apples don't taste very good. Johnny Appleseed planted seed grown apples which were really only good for one thing--hard cider. Gives you a whole new take on Johnny don't it?

I actually, seriously know a fair bit about apples, but what you've given isn't enough to go on.

You best bet is to take some samples (an apple or two, a few leaves, and some of the soil under the drip line of the tree) to your local ag agent (that's what we call them here. I'm sure you have something similar - local offices of what ever government agency deals with agriculture). They can likely tell you what type of apple tree it is, why it's suffering, what it needs, if there's a soil issue, etc.

But don't get your hopes up. You might have a type of tree whose apples are supposed to be 'small and sad looking' - crab apples or something similar.

Take a picture of the sad little apple tree me be? I'd like to see how big it is.

And see if its infested with something. Are there hangy cocoons on it by chance? Or does it have cancer? Does it need water?

I am no tree expert. I just love plants Smile

If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

I'm not a professional but I did help my grandfather in his apple orchard as a youngster. If I remember correctly, Small apples are a sign of the tree having trouble getting enough water in the growing season. While you could irrigate, sometimes all it needs is some moisture holding peaty soil a couple of feet off of the trunk like a big ring. Often this gets incorporated into the landscaping.

I don't know, I haven't been here long and I just discovered it. I don't know much about trees.

I will take some pictures of the tree for you guys. And also try to look up an agent (I never heard of a tree agent). I'm not sure how much I can trust the guy who just replaced my toilet but he insists that it is a regular apple tree that has been let go.
