Don't think plague is the right word at all. Very few religions actually kill you (unless you are waiting for a spaceship to pick you up as the world ends and the way onto the ship is to kill yourself or something) though many people kill and die FOR religion. Not many folks I know willing fight or die for the bubonic plague or any other disease.
I tend to think of it more like the appendix, and organ that once had a real purpose that may even have been important or necessary, but now hangs around, consumes resources, and can sometime flair up and kill you.
To say religions are useless is simply not true. They are tools just like many other tools invented by man. A hammer can build a house or crush a skull, it's not the hammer but the man(woman) behind it.
I would wager that human success as a species and our advancement was intrinisicly dependent on the rise of religions - they provided a great deal of evolutionary advantage to societies that had them and hence they continue on today. Much of that previous advantage has been replaced by advanement in society as a whole and the rise of the rule of secular law in many places.

Because a non-believer will always stay a non-believer. Makes perfect sense in tin-foil-hat-land.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

They are obviously full of shit.

So someone states they did not believe in God and then believed, seems quite the norm for the theists I have met.

It is exactly the norm for people who are indoctrinated into religion as a child, which is the majority of theists. :-)

Many of the theists i met practiced a faith not taught at home...heck most of their households believed in ancestor worship.
