We had three sons. Tragically, the oldest was killed two days before he would have turned seven. We were (and are) devastated.
A few months after his death, my wife was in the living room and saw a small smiling boy dressed in white skipping past her down the hall. A minute later our second son came out from the kitchen and told my wife that he had seen a small boy in white skipping away from him down the hall. They saw the apparition from two sides, from two rooms not connected. My wife did not prompt my son. They both described the same thing.
Shortly afterwards our youngest son opened his bedroom door and saw a young boy dressed in white sitting on his bed. Frightened, he turned and called my wife. When he looked back, the apparition was gone. When my wife felt the spot on the bed where it had been, the bed was warm.
These were not hallucinations. They were seen (or felt) by more than one, independently. I have no idea what they were. Does anyone else?
As a warning, many atheists are not very tolerant with supernatural discussions, so you may get a few heckles! I will not be one of them, I find it interesting.
Also, I am SO deeply sorry for your loss! I cannot imagine your grief.
I had 3 miscarriages during my abusive marriage, and I still mourn them, but to lose a child at 7, is just unimaginable!

In the past, I was a member of a couple different paranormal boards. They would most likely tell you, that this apparition was your son coming to visit. However, I cannot say for sure. I'm a newer atheist and honestly have no idea what is on the other side. Well? I guess nobody really knows!
Having said that, I have seen a short-haired white cat in my room twice in the last few months. This is absolutely no hallucination. I've also had similar experiences to yours. My kids have said we should write all our experiences down.
There's a really good site online called GhostStudy, that you might want to check out. I was a moderator there a long, long time ago. Many go there looking for help and answers. You maybe could get better feedback there.
